Students as Effective Technology Mentors

Abstract

Numerous challenges face teaching staff in a post-secondary institution
who wish to explore their options and integrate technology into
their teaching practice. The Technologies for Learning Centre (TLC)
at the University of Alberta has adopted a model which makes Arts
students available to teaching staff in the role of technology mentors.
Our student mentors guide, advise, and teach our teaching staff
about appropriate use of technology. The emphasis is less on production
of materials, more on the development of self-sufficiency for the
teaching staff member. The successes, advantages, and prospects
of this approach are discussed.
